I was honored to participate
in a recent roundtable event with Columbus Business First's People
to Know in Energy. We gathered together to discuss our ideas on where the
energy industry is headed. Topics spanned from regulation to growth areas to
technology. With HMB's expertise in IT business solutions, I openly discussed
the growing integration of technology within energy services that HMB is seeing
in client projects.
Customer facing applications. The energy industry now
interacts with its consumers very differently than it did 10 years ago. HMB is
regularly presenting and developing strategic IT projects and solutions for
energy firms. We've done work to support applications such as customer billing
systems and every-day business operational programs. Service providers are
recognizing the need to respond to new demands from today’s consumers. Websites
are continually updated to be attractive, interactive and user-friendly. People
want the opportunity and choice to pay their bills online or to handle that transaction
on a mobile device.
Real-time capabilities. The power outage watch
systems in place today are online and interactive so that when there is a
storm, the public can go online and see where the outages are in real time.
They can also participate and enter information themselves, updating company
websites to show that they have an outage. These types of capabilities
simultaneously enhance the customer experience along with the energy company's
ability to respond and provide more services.
Years ago in the energy
sector, IT would often drive business changes. Today, consumers themselves are helping
to drive the experience. Energy
companies are paying attention to the customer preferences and responding with
appropriate strategies, solutions and technologies.
